I'm in Las Cruces right now for work and I keep remembering the last time I was here with my husband for vacation. It just makes it harder to go somewhere (spending vacation days and dollars) when one of the two of us isn't super interested in going (again). And this is a bit worse because Tokyo is expensive, so it would probably be at the price of somewhere we both want to go. It's a balance right? All about compromise? They are real, and they are your feelings. If you feel the need to talk to someone about it, then pursue it whole-heartedly.

Lisa was in therapy already when her father died - which had some pretty huge ripple effects through the family - and thank goodness she was!

Because I am a math/physics person to my very core, I look at this as a vector analysis problem: magnitude and direction. (Lisa tolerates me for some reason). In other words - does the directionality of your feelings make sense? And is the magnitude in proportion to what is going on?

Not an exact science, but the introspection can be helpful - and show how other things impact moments like these, and how these things impact other moments.

I was glad to not see a 'others have it worse' statement - because that is ALWAYS true, yet never matters. Same for your husband dealing with his dad. No two people are the same, and no two scenarios are identical ... so naturally things will always be different.

And the reality it - things happen that forever change how we look at certain situations. You might never look at air travel the same way, maybe there will always be a little sadness ... or maybe not. Who knows.

And the realization that 'life goes on' is very mixed blessing - you know that it is true, and there is power and strength to that - yet at the same time there is coldness and remorse that we have lost someone and part of our heart has been ripped out and everyone around us is just continuing on as if nothing happened.

For now, you have to remember that there is no expiration date, no fixed timeline, and so on ... your feelings are your feelings.Michael Andersonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03061568790581429107noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8798785837432777875.post-74124449095847523772018-06-11T08:33:48.533-05:002018-06-11T08:33:48.533-05:00Prayers for comfort! At first you're just freezing cold, but then you realize you're drowning. I'm sorry. I hope you are comforted by the sweet memories you have. Graciehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05641028266038110278noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8798785837432777875.post-49618357789621046122018-05-01T13:25:10.884-05:002018-05-01T13:25:10.884-05:00So sorry you are dealing with this ... and yes it ...So sorry you are dealing with this ... and yes it is really hard.

Also yes, it is something that millions of people are dealing with right at this very moment - but no, you should never allow that to trivialize your feelings (or listen to anyone else try to trivialize them). Your feelings are your feelings and they are correct.

This stuff is really hard ... and sadly now I am seeing more of my peers dying both suddenly and after illness, as well as many more of those who were my mentors or are my parents ago.

I guess I go back and forth a bit on the sudden / prepared thing - on the one hand, the ability to wrap things up is nice, but it generally comes along with something like cancer or another prolonged disease.

My mom's dad died suddenly at 77, dropped in the carport tinkering around. That was shocking ... but her mom died very slowly of lung cancer that was just grueling.

But in some ways the worst was Lisa's dad - he died in '06 of Leukemia, which was rough ... but the bigger problem was that he mostly stopped doing anything outside of a small area and set of places after his first diagnosis - he basically quit, and being around him was not a healthy thing for our kids (or Lisa). So those final 6+ years were spent NOT building relationships and memories, but rather in a constant back & forth struggle.

Basically there is no good choice ... so it comes down to what you said: do what you can NOW, because ultimately none of us are ensured another tomorrow.Michael Andersonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03061568790581429107noreply@blogger.com
